Articles: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) crash causes Shutddown

An error message like this will appear, telling you that the RPC Service has terminated unexpectedly and your computer will be restarted. To resolve this problem, complete the following steps:
- To stop the system shutdown, choose "Run" from the Start menu, and type "cmd" (without quotes), and click "OK."
- Type "shutdown -a" (without quotes) to abort the shutdown.
- Type "exit" (without quotes) to exit the command prompt.
- Open the control panel, if you use the "Classic" start menu by choosing Start > Settings > Control Panel, and if you use the Windows XP Start Menu, by choosing Start > Control Panel.
- You then need to open the Network Connections control panel. If you use "Category View" this is contained within the "Network and Internet Connections" category, after which you need to select "Network Connections." If you use Classic view you need to select the "Network Connections" from the main Control Panel window.
- The following operations will need to be performed on your Internet connection (you may have more than one network connection, but if you try to perform these steps will find that you can't use the XP firewall on network connections):
- Right click and choose "Properties"
- Choose the "Advanced" tab
- Tick the box under "Internet Connection firewall" next to the description "Protect my Computer and networking by limiting or preventing access to this computer via the Internet
- Click here, and download the patch appropriate to your operating system. The links are about half way down the page. To find out what your operating system is, if you do not know, choose "Run" from the Start menu, and type "winver" (without quotes) and click "OK." The dialog box that pops up should tell you.
- Install the patch once you have downloaded it. Your computer may need to restart.
- You can now turn off the XP firewall again, by completing the following steps:
- Open the Network Connections control panel. If you use "Category View" this is contained within the "Network and Internet Connections" category, after which you need to select "Network Connections." If you use Classic view you need to select the "Network Connections" from the main Control Panel window.
- Right click and choose "Properties"
- Choose the "Advanced" tab
- Untick the box under "Internet Connection firewall" next to the description "Protect my Computer and networking by limiting or preventing access to this computer via the Internet
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Del, and from the "Process" tab, select the file "msblast.exe" and choose "End task."
- Now navigate to the folder C:\Windows\System32\ and delete a file called msblast.exe
- Now open the registry editor by choosing "Run" from the start menu and typing "regedit" (without quotes) and click "OK."
- Using the folder tree on the left navigate to the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
- Delete the key msblast.exe, containing the value "windows auto update"="msblast.exe"
- Exit the registry editor, and I suggest you update your antivirus software and run a full scan.
