Climbing at Rob’s

Despite the best efforts of one of Cambridge’s finest drivers this train, having travelled the 187 miles from from Birmingham New Street to Cambridge will arrive in Cambridge three minutes late. Please accept our apologies. This train terminates here, all change.

Climbing was cool, and I now notice I have loads of work to do before I return to college….

A 2005 meme

It’s 2006 and this, blogger informs me, is my 100th post. I’m also told I signed up in Februrary 2002, but seem to have had a rather inactive 4 years, the first year and a half definitely so.

I don’t feel like attempting to summarise 2005, so here’s a meme dealy. Perhaps I’ll return and finish it some time.

1. What did you do in 2005 that you'd never done before?

Lived (a small way) away from home, worked 9-5 in a proper posh office job.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Nope, and unlikely.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Fiona, on Christmas Eve. Really, really awesome! Yet to see photos of or actual baby though. A brief chat with Jonathan indicates everything is well though!

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Not that close, but John Evans. A post I notice I never finished writing and is half saved in my drafts. I hadn’t seen the guy in years but the tributes at his funeral were touching. Not so touching was the struggle I had to get the day off work. I get the impression Meg’s coping OK.

5. What countries did you visit?

Nowhere fun

6. What would you like to have in 2006 that you lacked in 2005?

To correct 5.

7. What date from 2005 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

31st July, for an apology.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Geekily and academically somehow ending up in Cambridge after missing a rather crucial maths exam, then failing my offer. A letter from the Master at the front of the college magazine mentioned how no one who missed their offer was accepted at Emma this year….

Less geekily umm I’m not sure. Perhaps I’ll return to this.

9. What was your biggest failure?

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

A bike accident in January, though not as painful as the previous December.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

Maria, particularly one evening. Helen lots. Simon lots. Helen frequently. Will, Nick, Cemal muchly.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

On occasion, a few people.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Saving to pay uni bills. I think the most expensive other thing I got was my monitor, shortly hopefully a camera. Nothing particularly interesting.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

University, and lots of stuff.

16. What song will always remind you of 2005?

Nothing exclusively 2005

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? similar, or happier

ii. thinner or fatter? similar

iii. richer or poorer? richer

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Seeing people in place of work, at times.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Work, I think. I don’t see that changing though.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

2005 with family in Wales, 2006 unknown.

22. Did you fall in love in 2005?

…but love is too familiar a word.

23. How many one-night stands?

0

24. What was your favorite TV program?

I haven’t watched all that much TV. Gordon Ramsay was good I seem to remember, Top Gear humerous. Hmm.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

No

26. What was the best book you read?

Daphne du Maurier’s “Rebecca” was good, and I’ve only read a few others. I’m not convinced direct comparison is useful here.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Metal ;-)

28. What did you want and get?

Many many things. Material and not.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

Harry Potter was really good, part of that being seeing it at midnight in a cinema full of people wearing gowns. Crazy, but good.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

18, dinner and then ooh… Dodgeball!

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2005?

Naff?

34. What kept you sane?

Friends.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

None really

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY.

37. Who did you miss?

People when they aren’t around.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2005:

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
